Role description:
We seek to hire a highly motivated Synthetic Biologist to join the Microbial Engineering division at Colorifix as a Research Scientist. The successful candidate will be a pivotal member of the team, supporting the development of new pigment-producing strains, with a particular focus on creating, characterising and leveraging genetic tools.

Skills should include strong experience in synthetic biology / molecular microbiology, biochemistry, DNA assembly, genetic engineering, optimisation of metabolic pathways and genome engineering. Knowledge in fermentation, bioinformatics, enzyme engineering, automation or analytical chemistry would be advantageous but not essential. Candidates with a working knowledge of electronic notebooks and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) will be at an advantage, but training will also be provided. The Microbial Engineering team is looking for a candidate who enjoys multi-disciplinary teamwork, taking on challenges, shows creativity, flexibility, enthusiasm, and excellent communication skills.

Junior Implementation Specialist

Role description:
As part of Implementation team, the junior implementation specialist will work together with our customers, bringing solutions to them and helping them to establish Colorifix technology on each site. They would be involved in the fermentor commissioning, demonstration tests (fermentation plus dye) at customers’ sites and client’s training onboarding on both laboratory and full-scale fermentation plus dye processes. They would also be responsible for knowledge capturing at the full-scale production in each site, to bring back the important inputs for the new strain development scientists and dye development at Colorifix’s R&D level.

Role description:
Colorifix is seeking an inquisitive and sociable Senior Finance Assistant to join its newly formed Finance Division. You would be joining Colorifix at an exciting time, the company having just closed a Series B funding round and being on the cusp of commercialising its R&D and rapidly expanding its team of 40.

You would work closely with the Head of Finance (currently being recruited) and admin colleagues who wear finance hats. Additionally, you will work with all your colleagues to support them with purchasing, customer liaison and to generally have a finger on the pulse of our organisation. Our team of 40 is fragmented, being split across three sites with some staff working remotely, so your ability to proactively build relationships will be highly valued.

You will own most aspects of our bookkeeping and manage the A/R and A/P ledgers. You would communicate with customer and supplier contacts, many of whom are foreign, so your ability to communicate financial information clearly will be an advantage. You might also liaise with our Portuguese subsidiary.

Finally, you would support the Head of Finance as necessary with financial reports, forecasts, and budgets.

You would work predominantly from either our Norwich or Cambridge sites with the option to work from home some days of the week.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Colorifix is seeking a commercially minded Head of Finance to drive its newly formed Finance Division to support the next stage of the company’s growth. You would be joining Colorifix at an exciting time, the company having just closed a Series B funding round and being on the cusp of commercialising its R&D and rapidly expanding its team of 40.

You would manage a Finance Assistant (currently being recruited), work closely with the CSO, COO and CEO and be part of the managerial decision-making processes. Ideally, you would have experience of the needs of an SME and be comfortable owning the many different functions of our Finance Division (e.g., from sales-ledger management to ad hoc analyses and modelling to support strategic decision making). You would need to be comfortable working in an agile environment and with multidisciplinary team members. Disagreements happen in this kind of environment and so good people are an advantage.

You could work from home much of the time, however the ability to spend the occasional day in our Cambridge or Norwich sites is essential. Our London-based staff also have an office space they like to collaborate in.

Fermentation Process Development Scientist

Role description:
As part of Implementation team, the Process Development Scientist will work closely with the new strain development scientists and the implementation specialists to develop the fermentation upstream processes. They would be responsible for giving the necessary information to build up the bridge between the lab-scale and the full-scale fermentation. The fermentation suite comprises of both bench-scale and full-scale bioreactors (from 1L to 250L). This series of bioreactors will be used to characterise Colorifix’s engineered microorganisms and produce dye liquor which can be quantified for specific pigments and/or applied on fabrics for small and big scale dyeing runs. In this role, the process development scientist is going to be responsible for testing new strains, checking for reproducibility, scalability, and opportunities for productivity increase, ensuring that workflow records are maintained for the whole of process development. Fermentation Process Assistant

As part of the implementation team, the fermentation process assistant will work with the fermentation specialists to provide day-to-day operations of Colorifix’s fermentation process at its facility in Cambridge, UK. The fermentation site has a microbiological lab and both pilot and full-scale bioreactors used to scale-up the Colorifix’s fermentation process and produce dye liquor which will be applied on fabrics for dyeing runs. This will involve working closely with the dye team at Cambridge site, to coordinate work across the process. The fermentation process assistant will be responsible for preparing, running, and collecting data from the fermentation runs. This includes collecting samples and carrying out analysis, along with the subsequent data analysis and report writing, ensuring that batch records are maintained for all runs. Role description:

At Colorifix, we transform industrial dyeing into an environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable process by using cutting-edge biotech.

We currently have lots of industrial and lab equipment that needs to be hooked up to our data acquisition system. We are looking for an Embedded System Engineer to help us hack into the control boards, develop gateways and use creative approaches to collect data from various equipment, including an in-house developed fermenter.

As the first Embedded System Engineer in the company, you will also have a chance to set up and run your own prototyping space. The successful candidate will be working within the informatics department but also in close collaboration with our scientists and technicians.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development of gateways and software to talk with industrial and lab equipment
  • Development of data capture hardware
  • Development of firmware/controller for our own fermentor
  • Development of industrial instrumentation
  • Miscellaneous technical task

Role Requirements:

  • Embedded programming: C, MicroPython
  • Experience with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, M5Stack or similar
  • Control system design, PID controllers
  • Experience with industrial automation, PLC programming
  • Practical skills: soldering, PCB prototyping, 3D design and 3D printing
  • Good understanding of Unix and Windows sytems
  • Knowledge of communication protocols: TCP/IP, HTTP, websocket, RPC, ModBus, Profinet, etc.
  • Bonus: Experience with instruments for biotech, coloration or fermentation

Coloration Technician

We are looking for a Coloration Technician for our pilot dye house in Cambridge. The Technician will gain practical experience of operating a dye house and expertise in our unique biology-based dye technology— this includes both textile coloration and industrial fermentation. The successful candidate may also be offered training which could lead to professional qualifications in this field.

We are looking for someone who is driven to learn new things and explore a real career opportunity in sustainable textile coloration. The role holder will join a diverse, interdisciplinary team and work in a fast-paced environment that brings together biotechnology, fashion, sustainability, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Following and learning the operation (control of equipment and systems)
  • Material preparation for processing 
  • Cross train on all machines for maximum flexibility 
  • Follow all health and safety rules and regulations 
  • Monitor inventory of dyehouse materials 
  • Carry out machine operations following the production plan in a timely manner.
  • Maintain cleanliness and operation of all the machines in the production area 

Skills & Experience

  • Educated to A-Level
  • An interest in and awareness of environmental sustainability 
  • Good colour acuity/recognition
  • Interest in textiles would be an advantage but not a requirement

We seek to hire a highly motivated SysAdmin to join our rapidly growing team. We had 5 employees at the start of last year, are now 35, and have a plan to double within the next two years. We have a lab in Norwich and are currently setting up a new site in Cambridge. We are looking for a person to bring IT expertise and establish/lead the IT Support for the growing team. An ideal candidate should be confident in implementing and managing IT infrastructure following the best practices; a jack of all trades, good at tasks from helping Joe to connect a printer to laying out a company guideline on IT security. Informatics: Confident in Python and with a background in bioinformatics, bioengineering, chemoinformatics, data visualisation, or computer science.

Coloration: Material science, biomaterials, or surface chemistry.

Microbial Engineering: Natural products, synthetic biology, molecular microbiology, analytics, or fermentation.
