Unlike the original implementation of genetic engineering, synthetic biology builds on our greatly improved understanding, control and most importantly our forethought in applying changes to DNA. We at Colorifix are using this technology to bring change to the way our clothes are made.


From our academic work in South Asia focusing on water quality, we learned that the textile dyeing industry is one of the biggest contributors to global water pollution. Water quality affects all aspects of the environment, including every organism living in it. We found a way to implement our skills in reducing this industry's negative impact, and Colorifix was born.

Nature already makes a wide variety of pigments. Walk into any garden and you can get an idea of the potential of Nature's palette. We "borrow" the pathways that make these colours and integrate them into the most efficient way to produce and apply them to fabrics. Reducing pollution and waste is our way of repaying Nature for what we borrow.

A critical step in our process is sterilisation, thus leaving our products completely free of the organism. All our products are made in a contained facility where every care is taken so that there is no contact between our organisms and the environment. In keeping with other modified organisms that produce medical or other consumer products, our organisms have been purposely disabled such that they cannot survive in the environment.
